What to do with short stature

Children’s growth and development is getting more and more attention from parents, and at this time of the year many parents go to the hospital to seek medical attention for their children’s growth and development problems. As the winter holidays approach, the number of children coming to the pediatric clinic of the health center looking for medical attention has increased significantly. Parents should pay conscious attention to their children’s height development at an early stage and treat their children early if their height is found to be abnormal. In China, there are more than 4.3 million people with short stature due to growth retardation, and the number is increasing by 161,000 every year. 2 to 11 years old is the prime time for treating short stature, but many parents do not know that short stature of children is also a disease. Children’s growth and development can be roughly divided into 3 stages: rapid growth, slow growth and accelerated growth during puberty. The rapid growth period is from embryonic stage to 2 years old. The growth rate is the fastest in the first year after birth, with a growth of about 25 cm or more. From the age of 2 years until puberty (about 10 years for girls and 12 years for boys) is the growth slowdown period. Growth accelerates again in the first two years after puberty, with boys growing 25 to 28 cm and girls growing 23 to 25 cm throughout puberty. Therefore, parents should pay close attention to their children’s height changes, and once short stature is diagnosed, the earlier the treatment, the better the results. When a child is found to be short in stature, he or she should go to a specialist clinic. Because there are many causes of short stature, it is necessary for the specialist to ask a detailed medical history, a comprehensive physical examination and necessary laboratory tests before a definite diagnosis can be made and treatment advice can be given. Short stature with incomplete bone development can grow taller through reasonable treatment and adjustment. For example, growth hormone replacement therapy, appropriate thyroid hormone supplementation, reasonable diet, exercise, and adequate sleep, etc. As long as parents can cooperate with doctors to actively treat short stature as early as possible, it is possible to grow taller. However, it should be noted that the earlier the growth hormone treatment is carried out, the better the results will be. The younger the child is, the more active the growth and differentiation of the cartilage layer of the epiphysis, the greater the growth potential and space, the more sensitive the child is to treatment, and the more effective the treatment is.
