How to pick the right wheelchair for you

For paraplegic, amputee and fracture patients among the earthquake victims, wheelchair is an important tool to help you improve your ability to take care of yourself, go to work and return to the society in a long or short period of time. Two days ago I happened to pass by a rehabilitation supplies store, go in and ask, there are more than 40 different sizes and models of wheelchairs for sale in the store. How can I choose a suitable wheelchair for myself? There are ordinary wheelchairs, one-sided drive wheelchairs, standing wheelchairs, electric wheelchairs, reclining wheelchairs, competition wheelchairs, and specialized wheelchairs for amputation (with the large wheels positioned at the back to maintain balance) and so on. General wheelchairs are also divided into solid tire wheelchairs with large front wheels and small rear wheels for indoor use, and pneumatic tire wheelchairs for outdoor use. The choice of wheelchair should take into account the nature and degree of disability, age, general functional status, and the place of use. If the casualty cannot maneuver the wheelchair by himself, he can choose a simple wheelchair and be helped by others to push it. Upper limb basically normal casualties, such as lower limb amputation casualties, paraplegic casualties, etc., can choose ordinary wheelchairs with handwheels in the pneumatic tire wheelchair. For those who have strong upper limbs but paralyzed fingers, wheelchairs with grips on the handwheels can be used. Like buying clothes, the size of the wheelchair should also fit. The right size can make all parts of the force uniform, not only comfortable, but also can prevent the emergence of adverse consequences. The following suggestions can be referred to: 1. Seat width: the width of the buttocks, plus 2.5-5 centimeters on each side. 2. 2, seat length: leaning back after sitting, the back of the knee joint from the front edge of the seat there is a distance of 5-7.5 centimeters. 3, backrest height: the upper edge of the backrest is about 10 centimeters flush with the armpit. 4.Footboard Height: The footboard is 5 centimeters from the ground. If the footboard can be adjusted up and down, it can be adjusted to the height where the distal 4 centimeters of the thighs are slightly raised without touching the seat cushion after the casualty is seated. 5, armrest height: elbow flexion 90 degrees, the height of the armrest for the seat to the elbow, plus 2.5 centimeters. For children who have not yet matured, it is especially important to choose an appropriate wheelchair. An inappropriate wheelchair will affect the normal development of the child’s body posture in the future. (1) The footplate is too high and the pressure is concentrated on the buttocks. (2) The footplate is too low, the foot can not be placed flat on the footplate, resulting in drop foot. (3) The seat is too shallow, with too much pressure on the buttocks and improper foot placement. (4) The seat is too deep, which can cause hunchback. (5) Armrests too high, causing shrugging and restricting shoulder movement. (6) Armrests too low, causing scoliosis. (7) Seat too wide, again causing scoliosis. (8) The seat is too narrow, which affects breathing, and it is not easy to change the body position in the wheelchair, sit in it or stand up. It is also impossible to wear thick clothes in winter. If the backrest is too low, the shoulder blades are above the back of the chair, and the body leans backward, making it easy to fall backward. If the backrest is too high, it restricts the movement of the upper limbs and forces the head to lean forward, creating a bad posture. Like buying clothes, with the child’s height and weight increase, after a period of time, should be replaced with a suitable model of wheelchair. With a wheelchair, after exercise, physical strength, skillful, not only can expand their own life, continue to study, work, and go to the community, but also strive to participate in the Paralympic Games, for the country to win.
