When can a psychiatric patient become pregnant?

It is common for patients and families to want to have their own children. For the safety of the child, it is best to stop all medications in the first trimester of pregnancy to avoid fetal malformations and affect fetal development. Discontinuing medication can easily lead to a relapse of the disease, and there is a contradiction between the two. However, in the final analysis, the choice of how to choose and how to have a child is ultimately at the discretion of the patient and family, and the decision rests with the patient and family. According to domestic and foreign experts, if you are pregnant while suffering from mental illness, you can follow the following instructions: 1. When you are pregnant, you can use antipsychotics or antidepressants, and generally speaking, there is no teratogenic problem. 2, sleeping pills may be teratogenic, but not serious, you can choose zolpidem; or use some antidepressants instead. 3, lithium carbonate, sodium valproate has teratogenic potential, can only be temporarily replaced with antipsychotics, or can be replaced with carbamazepine, lamotrigine. Besides, only smaller maintenance amounts are taken when pregnant; these drugs tend to be insoluble in water, so they pass through the blood, placenta and reach the fetus, only a minuscule bit, which will not have any effect. Don’t believe some obstetricians and gynecologists who say “no medication during pregnancy”. Otherwise, if a pregnant woman’s mental illness relapses, the amount of medication she takes will be even greater, which is not worth the loss. Since drugs are often dissolved in fat, the concentration of drugs in the lotion is higher, so it is recommended that women with mental illness should not breastfeed their children after delivery to avoid affecting the baby’s development. If medication is taken, it is recommended to do more prenatal examinations, such as multidimensional ultrasound, amniotic fluid examination to see if the fetus has any limb malformations, heart malformations, spina bifida, etc., to prevent accidents.
