In order to carry out and implement the scientific outlook on development in depth, comprehensively improve the public’s sleep health level, combined with the current stage of the development of sleep medicine and sleep hygiene in China, the China Sleep Research Association has set the theme of World Sleep Day on March 21, 2009 as “Scientific Management of Sleep”. The acceleration of modernization process inevitably brings people with increased work pressure, accelerated pace of life and great changes in lifestyle. Consequently, sleep problems and related disorders have become one of the most common diseases affecting public health. According to a domestic survey, 38% of the population in China has various types of sleep problems. Sleep problems and related disorders are closely related to psychological disorders, brain dysfunction, physical dysfunction and many other diseases. Sleep-related disorders are not even only a clinical medical problem, but also closely related to the maintenance of social stability and coordinated economic development. According to some data, in Europe and the United States and other countries, every year due to sleep-related disorders caused by medical costs, personal injury and operational errors and other economic burdens and losses up to tens of billions of dollars. In China, people still lack sufficient understanding of the harm caused by sleep problems and related disorders; the negative impact of sleep-related disorders on the development of the national economy has not yet attracted enough attention from the whole society; the problem of sleep disorders in larger groups urgently needs scientific guidance and management; the scientific and technological research and development of independent sleep drugs and sleep health products in China is still seriously lagging behind the objective needs of the current development of the society. Li Yanzhong, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Qilu Hospital, Shandong University We advocate that “scientific management of sleep” should cover the following three levels: First, scientific knowledge of sleep. First, the scientific knowledge of sleep. Healthy sleep in accordance with science is an important factor to maintain strong energy and physical strength. Under the situation of rapid social development, we usually attach great importance to certain personal abilities, such as working ability, creativity, learning ability, etc., but neglect the individual’s ability to take the initiative to regulate in the face of various adversities. The formation of strong working ability, but psychological vulnerability; strong will, but sleep deprivation. This is one of the important links leading to sleep disorders. In this regard, the general public should be popularized and educated with scientific knowledge related to sleep, so as to improve the public’s self-management ability of healthy sleep. Second, the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders require scientific management. The prominent feature of sleep disorders is that the causes of the disease vary greatly. How to find the cause of illness, correct diagnosis, individualized intervention, and realize scientific and reasonable management of sleep disorders are practical problems faced by every health worker. Therefore, it is necessary to standardize and train clinicians in diagnosis and treatment. Thirdly, the scientific and technological content of the research and development of sleep health products needs to be improved. China has a large population and a large group of sleep disorders, however, there are very few products related to sleep aids with independent intellectual property rights in China, and their scientific and technological content is not high. In the promotion of healthy sleep, such as sleep environment, bedding, sleep aid system, etc., there exists a wide range of scientific and technological research and development space; for the current listed sleep aid products should be scientifically verified, to give the public a safe and effective high-tech sleep aid system. Focusing on the above issues, China Sleep Research Association, as a national-level academic organization under the leadership of China Association for Science and Technology, will carry out on-site missionary activities on healthy sleep, expert clinics, surveys, academic exchanges, etc., in all regions of the country, and disseminate the scientific knowledge of sleep management in a variety of media such as newspapers, networks and videos, so as to comprehensively improve the level of healthy sleep for the general public. In fact, sleep problems mainly include two aspects: one is insomnia, the other is sleep breathing disorder (snoring). This year, during the World Sleep Day, the Sleep and Breathing Disorders Center of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University will hold free consultations on sleep breathing disorders, etc. At that time, the experts of our department on sleep breathing disorders will answer the questions on the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea syndrome for you.
