Can pregnant women with kidney stones take medicine?

For kidney stones found in pregnant women, there is usually no need to take special medication to treat the disease. Because stones are mainly formed by the crystallization of some formed components in the urine, it is impossible to cure the disease completely by medication. Currently, stones are mainly treated by lithotripsy, such as extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, holmium laser lithotripsy, and percutaneous nephrolithotripsy. However, for pregnant women who develop stones during pregnancy, it is advisable to remove the obstruction. If the stone is located in the kidney and does not cause hydronephrosis, it can be removed by drinking plenty of water and maintaining a healthy attitude. If the stone is displaced into the ureter, causing hydronephrosis and more severe pain. In this case, a ureteroscope can be inserted into the double J tube to drain the urine from the renal pelvis to the bladder. After delivery, a timing can be chosen for the lithotripsy of the ureteral stones. Therefore, the main treatment for stones in pregnant women is symptomatic, and medication is usually not very useful.
