Our eyes are equivalent to a camera, and each eye has a clear lens, which is equivalent to the lens of the camera, and when the lens becomes cloudy, a cataract is formed. Cataract is a common and frequent eye disease among the elderly and is the main blindness-causing eye disease, and WHO calls those with cloudy lens and corrected visual acuity below 0.5 clinically significant cataract. There are currently 5 million cataract patients in China, with 2 million in urgent need of surgery and 400,000 to 500,000 new patients each year. The Party and the government attach great importance to poor cataract patients and plan to implement free sight restoration surgery for one million poor cataract patients in three years from 2008 to 2011.
