Belching, also called burping, is the process by which gas is expelled from the stomach through the mouth.
Belching is a symptom caused mainly by stomach disorders. It is because of factors such as poor stomach digestion or more cold air inhalation, and the gas in the stomach travels up and out through the mouth through the throat. The gas makes a loud sound as it passes through the throat, commonly known as burping.
Belching is divided into functional and pathological. Functional belching is mainly due to more cold air being inhaled in the stomach, and the cold stomach stimulates the diaphragm, causing spasmodic contraction of the diaphragm, resulting in a series of symptoms as gas travels up the stomach and through the pharynx.
When functional belching occurs, it is recommended to take more deep breaths or drink some hot water and to do hot compresses on the stomach to relieve the symptoms. It is important to keep the stomach warm to avoid getting cold, and try not to breathe with your mouth open during exercise to avoid inhaling too much cold air, which can cause stomach discomfort and belching.
Most pathological belching is a symptom of stomach disease, such as gastritis, gastric ulcer or gastric cancer, which causes indigestion and excessive gas production, and requires early and symptomatic treatment with a doctor.
