Are there benign kidney tumors?

There are two major categories of kidney tumors: benign and malignant.

Benign tumors mainly include:

  • Renal vascular smooth muscle lipoma (malignant tumor);
  • Renal cortical adenoma;
  • paraglomerular cell tumors;
  • Fibromas;
  • smooth muscle tumors, etc.

Malignant tumors mainly include:

  • Renal cell carcinoma and pelvic uroepithelial carcinoma originating from epithelial tissues;
  • Fibrosarcoma, liposarcoma, smooth muscle sarcoma, and rhabdomyosarcoma originating from mesenchymal tissue;
  • Nephroblastoma and embryonal carcinoma originating from embryonic tissues.

A large number of data show that renal malignancies account for 96% to 98% of all renal tumors, and among renal malignancies, renal cancer predominates, accounting for about 90%, with pelvic cancer being the most common among the remaining 10%. Some benign tumors are difficult to distinguish from malignant tumors and require the diagnosis and treatment of an experienced oncologist.
