What should be achieved in the prevention and management of asthma patients?

The goal of an asthma management program is to control asthma. The current consensus asthma goals are: 1. minimal (ideally no) chronic symptoms, including nocturnal symptoms; 2. minimal acute exacerbations; 3. no emergencies; 4. minimal (ideally no) use of short-acting beta 2 agonists (e.g., Ventolin, etc.); 5. no restriction of daily activities (including exercise); 6. diurnal variability in peak flow rate (PEF) measurements; and 7. “5. no restriction of daily activities (including exercise). 6. diurnal variability of peak flow rate (PEF) measurement less than 20%, close to normal PEF. 7. minimal or no side effects of medication.
