Drinking alcohol causes anemia

I’m sure we all know about anemia. However, for many people, it may be unheard of to drink alcohol and become anemic. The First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University saw a patient with anemia from drinking. Mr. He, 44, found himself with a yellowish complexion ten days before he was hospitalized. He did not care at the time, and in the following days, he felt weak and had chest tightness after activities. So Mr. He came to the First Affiliated Hospital of He University for examination, and after routine blood tips and bone marrow tests, Mr. He was diagnosed with iron-granulocytic anemia. At that time, the hematocrit was only 59g/L, which belonged to severe anemia. Mr. He was puzzled, he had always been in good health, and he had not been anemic before. Dr. Kuang-Hua Yan, the director of hematology department, asked Mr. He about his life and told Mr. He that his anemia was caused by drinking alcohol. It was understood that Mr. He drank about 1 pound of white wine every day and had been drinking for 25 years. Dr. Kuang-Hua Yan said that the patient’s long-term alcohol consumption led to chronic alcoholism. Iron granulocyte anemia, which accounts for 31% of alcoholism hospitalizations. Iron granulocyte anemia due to alcoholism can be accompanied by a decrease in serum folate. Alcohol inhibits the conversion of pyridoxine (i.e., vitamin B6) to pyridoxal phosphate (a coenzyme in heme synthesis) and exacerbates folic acid deficiency. Iron-granulocytic anemia is particularly prevalent in alcoholics who have reduced food intake. Dr. Yan advised the patient to drink less alcohol in the future, preferably to abstain from alcohol, and to give him high doses of vitamin B6 as well as folic acid and vitamin B12. Within 20 days, the patient recovered and was discharged from the hospital. Dr. Yim advises that if you find yourself with anemia symptoms, you should not blindly take blood-boosting drugs or blood transfusions, but should go to a hospital hematologist to identify the cause of anemia and then treat it accordingly.
