Vocal fold polyp is a relatively common voice disease, often caused by abuse of the voice after a cold or after drinking alcohol. And sometimes it’s serious, sometimes it’s easy. Usually, when you come to our laryngologist, we will confirm the diagnosis through laryngoscopy and discuss with you about surgery to remove the polyp, because conservative treatments such as voice training and medication are not very effective, and less than 10% of patients may be cured. If you feel that your voice is particularly important to you, you may need to make a decision to have surgery. The surgery is usually performed in the hospital under general anesthesia and is painless except for the pain of the arm injection. With the vocal cords still, we remove the vocal cord polyps with a microscope in a careful and minimally invasive procedure. The hospital stay is about 2-3 days, but please remember that surgery is not a cure-all. Some bad habits of using the voice due to long-term vocal cord polyps still need voice training for correction.
