Is hoarseness to be taken seriously?

The degree of hoarseness varies depending on the severity of the lesion, ranging from low pitch and coarseness in mild cases to hoarseness or even whispering or loss of voice in severe cases. Usually, the symptoms of hoarseness are mostly caused by laryngeal lesions. It is important to note that many chest tumors; such as esophageal cancer and mediastinal tumors, can directly invade the laryngeal nerve that innervates the vocal cords, or local lymph node metastases such as lung cancer can compress the nerve, which can lead to the symptoms of hoarseness. Therefore, for middle-aged and elderly people, if hoarseness occurs without any obvious cause and does not subside or even worsens, they should pay great attention to it and go to ENT department for examination first. It is a pity that many patients with esophageal cancer, lung cancer, mediastinal tumor and other thoracic tumors have hoarseness as the first symptom, but they are ignored by the patients and the best treatment time is delayed when diagnosed.
