Advantages of electrolaryngoscopic minimally invasive excision of vocal fold polyps

Vocal cord polyps are common diseases in otolaryngology, mostly caused by excessive use of the voice and improper vocalization, mainly manifested as hoarseness. Nowadays, the most common surgical treatment is: electronic laryngoscopy or laryngoscopic polyp removal with support. Our department uses electronic laryngoscopy to treat vocal fold polyps. Electronic laryngoscopy has been used in China since the mid to late 1990s, and has rapidly gained popularity among laryngologists for its clear vision. The electronic laryngoscope has the following advantages compared with the support laryngoscope for the treatment of polyps: 1. The clear image of the electronic laryngoscope makes it easier to find the extent of the vocal fold polyps and makes the surgical field clearer; 2. Less complications. Compared with laryngoscopy, which can easily cause complications such as soft palate abrasion and bruising, loose teeth and mucosal abrasion of the upper lip, electronic laryngoscopy has fewer complications and is easier for patients to accept; 4. The operation is easy and short, usually only 5-10 minutes; 5. It can be treated on an outpatient basis without hospitalization, and the cost is low. Our department has experienced through more than 100 cases of vocal cord polyps removal: for mild, tipped polyps ( small and medium-sized polyps), they can be removed at one time with good results; for huge or broad-based polyps, if it is difficult to remove them at one time, they can be removed in stages, which also have better clinical results. Statistical results show that there are few cases of postoperative recurrence, and there is no significant difference in the results compared to supported laryngoscopic resection under general anesthesia.
