Can infectious mononucleosis recur?

Infectious mononucleosis occurs only once in a lifetime in most people, with a very small number of patients experiencing a recurrence of symptoms months or even years later.
In most patients, the EBV remains dormant in the body after the disease and the virus can reactivate periodically but does not cause symptoms, but in immunodeficient patients, the symptoms of infectious mononucleosis can occur after the virus reactivates.
In rare cases, symptoms of infectious mononucleosis may persist and develop into a chronic active EBV infection. If symptoms of infectious mononucleosis recur, prompt medical attention should be sought.
