The disease is a self-limiting illness, mostly lasting two to three weeks, but rarely extending to several months, with fatigue and poor functional status lasting for several months.
There is no specific treatment for the disease, and antiviral drugs such as acyclovir and ganciclovir can be given if necessary, as well as symptomatic treatment.
