How many days can I be discharged from the hospital after appendectomy?

Discharge time from appendectomy depends on the patient’s surgical procedure, general condition and post-operative recovery. If laparoscopic appendectomy is performed, the patient is usually discharged from the hospital in 2-5 days if the postoperative recovery is smooth. In the case of traditional open surgery, the patient will be discharged from the hospital in 5-7 days if the recovery is smooth. For patients with other diseases or older patients with slower recovery, the discharge time may be extended. In case of postoperative complications, the complications should be well controlled before discharge. The general indications for discharge are that the patient has started to ventilate after surgery and is in good general condition. If the postoperative period is complicated by incisional infection, the sutures should be removed, cleared and drained, and the wound should be discharged after it has healed. If complicated by intestinal adhesions or intestinal obstruction, prompt correction of water and electrolyte disorders and control of complications by enema, gastrointestinal decompression or surgery are required. In addition, after appendectomy, patients are advised to get out of bed appropriately to promote gastrointestinal peristalsis and prevent intestinal adhesions. A liquid diet with easy digestion, low fat, low sugar and high protein is recommended.
