How risky is scoliosis orthopedic surgery?

Any surgery is traumatic to the organism and therefore carries risks. However, for diseases that can only be treated surgically, surgery is a certain amount of trauma in exchange for the treatment of the disease. The question of whether the benefits or the disadvantages are greater is considered. Spinal surgery involves the spinal cord and nerves, which is riskier than general surgery and requires the full cooperation of surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses, and many surgeries also require intraoperative spinal cord monitoring, etc. Therefore, high technology and experience are required. The Department of Orthopedics at Peking Union Medical College Hospital has been pioneering the diagnosis, treatment and research of scoliosis in China since the 1970s, and has successfully treated more than 4,000 cases. I myself have now successfully completed nearly 1000 cases of various types of scoliosis orthopedic surgery, and have accumulated standardized surgical techniques and rich surgical experience. Our treatment concept is advanced and scientific, our surgical technique is standardized and mature, and our surgical experience is experienced and reliable, so that the risk of surgery is greatly reduced. Therefore, there is no need to worry too much about the surgical risks. Those ideas and practices that delay surgical treatment because of excessive concern about surgical risks are undesirable.
