Swelling of the ankles or lower extremities is certainly the fastest to reduce swelling by applying diuretics, but not all swelling of the lower extremities can be eliminated more effectively by diuretics. Generally speaking, edema of the lower extremities caused by heart failure or renal failure is mostly due to sodium and water retention, and the application of diuretics is more effective. If the edema is caused by hypoproteinemia, supplementation of protein and improvement of osmolality may be more effective. If the edema is caused by hypothyroidism, active treatment of endocrine disease can eliminate the edema as soon as possible. If the rubbery legs are due to lymphatic obstruction caused by filariasis, then conventional medications to reduce edema are largely ineffective.
