What is gallstones a serious disease?

Gallstones are usually referred to as gallbladder stones. This means that the presence of stones inside the gallbladder is a benign condition that is generally not serious. Stones in the gallbladder can cause damage to the gallbladder mucosa by repeated irritation, which can induce chronic inflammation of the gallbladder. Patients will often experience vague pain and distension in the right upper or mid-upper abdomen. If chronic cholecystitis is present, laparoscopic cholecystectomy is usually recommended. Acute gallbladder inflammation may also occur, usually triggered by the consumption of high-fat or high-protein foods. The nature of the pain is significantly worse, with pain in the upper right or upper middle abdomen, accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Ultrasound examination of the gallbladder can be performed, which usually reveals a thick wall and exudation around the gallbladder. If acute cholecystitis is diagnosed, laparoscopic cholecystectomy is also required.
