Principles of treatment for early-onset scoliosis

Scoliosis detected before the age of 5 is early onset scoliosis and after the age of 5 is late onset scoliosis. Lung growth is fastest between birth and 3 years of age, and scoliosis before 8 years of age already leads to pulmonary hypoplasia and a reduction in the number of alveoli, as well as a reduction in the number and size of the pulmonary arteries. Early-onset scoliosis has a high mortality rate of up to 60%, with most deaths due to respiratory failure and cardiovascular disease. Early-onset scoliosis can be treated in several stages: before the age of 5 years; cephalopelvic ring traction, plaster, and braces. From 5 to 10 years of age: growth stick treatment. After 10 years of age: fusion surgery. However, as far as the results are concerned, it is important to emphasize early detection and early treatment.
