Common psychiatric symptoms and care of Alzheimer’s patients

  1. Anxiety – Patients with dementia are prone to loss and insecurity, with symptoms such as fidgeting, repeatedly picking clothes, rubbing hands together, yelling or walking back and forth everywhere, and even refusing to eat and treat. Countermeasures: Give the patient enough lighting, ensure the living room is quiet, arrange interesting activities, and play a relaxing music.  2, depression – specific manifestations of sluggishness, withdrawal, loss of appetite, distraction, sleep disorders, fatigue, etc.. Countermeasures: listen patiently to the patient’s narrative, do not force the patient to do unwanted things, encourage participation in sports, walking is appropriate.  3. Agitation – unstable emotion, often angry over trivial matters, avoidance, stubbornness, uncooperative. Countermeasures: Analyze the specific causes of agitation, comfort the patient, avoid irritating language, and encourage regular exercise to achieve the purpose of relaxation.  4. Euphoria – often shows a sense of satisfaction, easy nostalgia, self-congratulation, increased talk, facial expressions give the impression of childishness and stupidity. Countermeasures: Respect the patient, increase activities, such as playing chess, reading newspapers, playing tai chi, etc.  5, indifference – manifested as withdrawal, loneliness, avoidance of interaction with people, lack of interest in the environment. Countermeasures: Increase the illumination, place the patient’s favorite objects in the room, such as calendars, clocks, photos, radios, etc. Speak caring words to the patient to build a trusting relationship and encourage what the patient is doing.
