Eating disorders are mainly treated on an outpatient basis. Inpatient treatment is a short-term measure or a one-time treatment process used in special cases. Most people do not require hospitalization. Indications for inpatient treatment of anorexia nervosa: 1. Body mass index (BMI, weight kg/height m2) less than 15, or less than 75% of ideal body weight, and severe malnutrition cachexia; 2. Even if the body weight is not less than 75% of ideal body weight, but there is refusal to eat, rapid weight loss, requiring forced treatment by hospitalization; 3. Indications for inpatient treatment of bulimia nervosa: 1. Outpatient treatment is ineffective; 2. Combined with serious physical illness (e.g., metabolic disorders, anemia, abnormal vital signs, uncontrollable vomiting); 3. Self-injurious or suicidal behavior; 4. Psychotic symptoms that cannot be explained by an eating disorder and require inpatient treatment; 5. Or accompanied by severe alcohol or drug abuse.
