Does Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan aggravate dampness-heat?

Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan is a proprietary Chinese medicine. Its main effect is to nourish Yin and clear heat (nourish Yin essence and remove heat). If not used properly, it can aggravate dampness and heat. Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan is composed of Zhi Mu, Huang Bai, Mudan Pi, Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, Chinese yam, Poria, and Ze Xie Di. It has the effect of nourishing yin and clearing heat. It is suitable for cases of Yin deficiency and internal heat. It is mainly used for treating hot flashes (a burst of fever), night sweating (abnormal sweating after going to sleep and stopping after waking up), tinnitus, spermatorrhea, dry mouth and sore throat, and short and red urine (small amount of urine with dark yellow color). Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan is good at clearing deficiency heat, but is unable to remove heat caused by dampness. Excessive use of Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan will result in too much nourishment of Yin. If the patient’s spleen and stomach are not strong enough to transport the nourishing yin products, dampness will be generated; if spleen yang is not strong enough (insufficient yang energy in the spleen) and qi is not smooth (the body’s gases do not run smoothly), then it will exacerbate the heat and dampness. Therefore, Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan is not recommended for patients with weak spleen, dampness and depression generating heat, as it may aggravate spleen deficiency and dampness-heat. Note: This medicine should be used with caution in pregnant women, patients with deficiency-cold type should be cautious, and allergy sufferers should be cautious. Patients with dampness-heat type should use drugs to clear heat and dispel dampness, or use Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan. Each person’s physique is different, Chinese medicine is more complex, need to be a professional Chinese medicine practitioner to identify and treat, not indiscriminate medication.
