What is ovarian goiter?

Ovarian goiter is a thyrotoxicosis caused by the presence of thyroid tissue in the ovarian tissue and is extremely rare clinically. The thyroid gland is located in the neck and the ovaries are located in the pelvis. The presence of thyroid tissue in the ovarian tissue is called ovarian ectopic thyroid tissue, which is capable of secreting excessive thyroid hormones on its own, causing diffuse or nodular enlargement of the thyroid gland, and can clinically lead to hyperthyroidism. In general, proptosis is less common in this group. A mass can be palpated in the abdomen, which is characterized by a hard texture and clear margins, often accompanied by pressure pain. Confirmation of the diagnosis relies on pathologic biopsy and can occasionally be detected by iodine-131 scan of the thyroid gland, making ovarian goiter a more difficult category of disease to diagnose.
