China is the world’s largest producer, consumer and victim of tobacco, with 350 million smokers. 2002, the third national epidemiological survey on smoking, the results show that the smoking rate of people over 15 years of age in China was 35.8%, of which 66.0% and 3.1% for men and women respectively. The number of smokers in the world is about 1.3 billion, 4.9 million people die each year from tobacco-related diseases, accounting for 1M10 of total deaths. tobacco-related deaths now account for the first cause of death worldwide, and by 2025 the total number of deaths will exceed the sum of tuberculosis, malaria, childbirth and perinatal complications and AIDS. The annual number of deaths from tobacco-related diseases in China is 1 million, more than the combined number of deaths from AIDS, tuberculosis, traffic accidents, and suicide, accounting for 12% of all deaths, and is expected to rise to 33% by 2020. Cigarette smoke is a complex mixture of more than 4,000 compounds. Among these compounds, nicotine is the addiction-causing substance, and tobacco tar, carbon monoxide, hydrocyanic acid, ammonia and aromatic compounds are the major toxic substances, of which at least 69 are known carcinogens. About 30% of all cancer deaths can be attributed to the use of tobacco products. Smoking is a risk factor for many diseases, and tobacco can damage almost all organs of the body. 1998, Prof. Yang Gonghuan and other professors organized and led a retrospective survey of 1 million deaths and a follow-up survey of 250,000 people in China. Both surveys showed that smoking causes 45% of deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, 15% of deaths from lung cancer, and 5% to 8% of deaths from esophageal cancer, stomach cancer, liver cancer, stroke, coronary heart disease, and tuberculosis. Because the health damage caused by smoking is characterized by a long-term lag, smoking 10 years, 20 years or even longer before the appearance of related diseases, so before the appearance of disease, smokers often do not recognize the dangers of smoking.
