What causes body dysmorphic disorder?

Somatic intention is a memory image of the size, shape, and form of our bodies, not the actual representation, but how they look to the inner eye. It’s a sense of what we think, what we see and what we look like when others look at us. It is distressing and affects our ability to live, socialize, work or learn. This extreme dissatisfaction with a part of the body is Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), historically known as dysmorphic phobia. So how is it caused? Many people with BDD experience depression at some time in their lives, and family members who develop BDD have a high prevalence of depression.BDD and depression are characterized by low self-esteem, feelings of rejection, hypersensitivity, and sometimes feelings of worthlessness. Even in the absence of depression, patients with BDD have considered suicide. BDD is also co-morbid with other disorders. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and hair-pulling are common comorbidities in patients with BDD. Some patients with BDD also have drug or alcohol abuse.
