Is a colonoscopy painful?

Colonoscopy usually requires anesthesia and is usually not more painful and can be tolerated. In general, there are two types of colonoscopies: flexible tubeoscopy and rigid tubeoscopy. Rigid tubeoscopy requires entering the intestinal cavity through the anus without special preparation, and may be somewhat uncomfortable. Sigmoidoscopy and proctoscopy, on the other hand, require an enema or an open colon, and the patient’s stool is cleared for the examination. Generally, doctors operate gently and do not feel any special pain. If the operation is rough, there may be symptoms of anal swelling or abdominal pain. In contrast, the mirror of colonoscopy is longer, about 80-90 cm, and the patient will have a painful feeling of distension during the examination, but about 90% of people can tolerate it. With the development of medicine, there are now painless colonoscopies, and the pain of patients can be further reduced. During a general colonoscopy, special attention needs to be paid to maintaining a state of deep breathing and relaxation. Before the examination, follow the doctor’s instructions to make relevant preparations and avoid eating foods that are difficult to digest.
