TOAST typing is an internationally popular etiological analysis of cerebral infarction with many subtypes, the most classic TOAST typing includes five types, as follows: 1. Atherosclerotic stroke, in which the aorta or branch cortical arteries of the brain are narrowed by more than 50% or occluded. 2. 3. occlusion of small arteries, including other small cerebral arteries and occult luminal strokes. 4. ischemic strokes of other causes, including infectious, immunologic, genetic, vascular, and drug-induced infarcts. 5. cerebral infarcts of unknown origin, which include those for which no cause can be found after extensive evaluation with clinically available tools. There are other versions, including the South London modified TOAST typing, which is subdivided into 8 etiologies, and the Korean modified typing, which are not part of the mainstream of stroke typing.
