Vestibular ataxia is a spatial orientation disorder caused by vestibular lesions, mainly balance disorders, manifesting unsteadiness in standing, leaning to the side of the disease when walking, walking in a straight line, changing head position, and ataxic movements of the limbs; often accompanied by vertigo, vomiting, and nystagmus. The vestibular function of the inner ear is diminished or absent with the warming (hot and cold water) test or rotation test. The closer the lesion is to the inner ear vagus, the more ataxic it is. So, what is the physical examination of vestibular ataxia? The following are the physical examinations of vestibular ataxia: 1. Finger-nose test: In ataxia, the movements are different in weight and speed, and the target can be pointed by mistake or after adjustment. In the case of cerebellar hemisphere lesions, the closer the ipsilateral side is to the target, the more pronounced the ataxia is, and the poor distance discrimination can often exceed the target. In sensory ataxia, there is no impairment of ataxic movement with eyes open, but there is obvious ataxia when eyes are closed. 2, heel-knee-shin test: cerebellar damage when lifting the leg and touching the knee due to poor distance discrimination and intentional tremor, often swaying unstable when moving down; sensory ataxia, the patient’s heel often can not find the knee, swaying when moving down. 3.Rapid rotation test: clumsy movement and uneven rhythm when cerebellar damage. 4.Reverse test: When cerebellar lesion. Patients often cause excessive movements and whack themselves. 5. Over-finger test: In vestibular ataxia, the upper limb descends in favor of the side of the vagus with lesions; in sensory ataxia, the examiner’s fingers are often not found when the eyes are closed. 6.Toe-finger test: The patient lies on his back and raises the big toe to touch the outstretched finger. 7, sit-up test: patients with cerebellar damage to the medulla and trunk at the same time flexion, double lower limbs lift, called the joint flexion sign.
