The incidence of this disease is high and can occur at any age, slightly more men than women, the incidence in the United States is 13-34/100,000 per year, and the incidence in China is about 425.7/100,000 per year, in recent years, the incidence in China has a trend of increasing year by year, and the degree of lesion has also increased. If the disease is not treated in a timely manner or if it is not treated or mistreated, many sequelae will remain, which will seriously affect the appearance and quality of life of people and endanger human health. According to Chinese medicine, the pathogenesis of the disease is mostly due to the deficiency of positive energy, the vacancy of the veins and ligaments, the lack of solidity of the external guard, the wind evil taking advantage of the deficiency to enter the meridians, the paralysis of qi and blood, the loss of moistening of the facial tendons and veins, resulting in longitudinal muscle retardation. Western medicine believes that the disease is mostly caused by local neurovascular spasm caused by wind and cold, viral infection and autonomic instability, resulting in nerve ischemia and edema, which leads to myelin loss of the facial nerve and axonal degeneration. The exact cause of this disease is still unknown. For the treatment of the disease, there are three main methods: 1, Western medicine treatment; 2, Chinese medicine internal and external application treatment; 3, acupuncture treatment. Western medicine mostly uses hormone anti-inflammatory combined with anti-viral therapy, the effect of the acute phase is more prominent, but for the sequelae of the efficacy is poor, and the hormone side effects are large. Chinese medicine internal and external treatment is based on evidence-based treatment, taking the principle of dispelling wind and dispersing cold, activating blood circulation, and combining overall treatment with local treatment, which has the advantage of being less painful and less likely to leave sequelae if treated timely. Acupuncture has a long history of treating this disease without side effects, and it has the function of unblocking the meridians and regulating the qi and blood, and the efficacy of acupuncture in treating this disease has been fully certified through a lot of basic and clinical research over the years. After many years of clinical practice, our acupuncture department has developed a set of acupuncture and medicine combination and acupuncture and canning combination based on the traditional acupuncture method. For the treatment of severe facial palsy and the sequelae of facial palsy, our department has also made certain breakthroughs, especially for Hunter’s facial palsy, which is considered incurable by Western medicine, we have summed up a set of unique treatment methods. With the progress of modern science, many treatment instruments such as polarized light therapy instrument and red light therapy instrument have also been introduced into the treatment of this disease. At present, our department adopts acupuncture and moxibustion for mild to moderate facial palsy patients, and a combination of acupuncture and medicine for severe patients. For the difficult sequelae, we use bloodletting, medicinal jars and fire acupuncture together with polarized light therapy instrument and red light therapy instrument.
