Facial nerve paralysis is a common disease mainly characterized by motor dysfunction of facial expression muscle groups, with the main symptom manifested as crooked mouth and eyes. External application of castor seed kernel to treat facial paralysis is a traditional therapy, which has been recorded in Li Shizhen’s Compendium of Materia Medica in the Ming Dynasty, and Bao Xiangji’s New Compilation of Examination and Recipe in the Qing Dynasty. Literature reports in recent years have suggested that the treatment of facial paralysis with castor beans has some efficacy. Commonly used methods include: (1) castor beans 30g, ice tablet 1g, castor beans kernel peeled, pounded into mud, add ice tablet stirred, spread on 3~4cm round mulberry paper crushed into cakes, wrapped in mulberry paper, applied to the affected area, and switched after drying. Light cases twice, heavy cases with three or five times. (2) castor kernel 5 ~ 7 shell, plus vinegar, mashed into mud, applied to the jaw joints and corners of the mouth (thickness of about 3cm), plus gauze bandage fixed, 4 ~ 6 hours to remove, change the medicine once a day, basically can be cured in 10 days. (3) high-quality Ba Dou, castor peeled and shelled, crushed according to 4.5:5.5 mixing, in the affected side of the face to select Yang Bai, sun, dicang, cheek car, zygongsiao points, the first cotton swabs coated with sesame oil on the local skin, and then take soybean-sized Ba Dou castor scattered, put on the points coated with sesame oil, fixed with adhesive tape. The general application time is 12h, according to the sensitivity of each person’s skin to adjust the length of time appropriately. After the drug is removed, the local skin of the patch will be red and peeling, and in severe cases, the local skin will be red and swollen, blisters, usually no treatment is needed, and the symptoms can subside by themselves in about 1 week. This method is effective for facial paralysis in combination with conventional acupuncture treatment. (4) There are also used in the morning with castor leaves crushed compress the right side of facial paralysis, the evening use of raw eel tail extrusion of fresh blood coated with facial paralysis on one side, once a day, so repeated for about 1 week, the patient’s facial paralysis can be basically cured. It should be noted that castor beans may produce skin irritation, must strictly control the dose and time of dressing, to avoid the amount of medicine and time problems caused by facial lesions or even scarring. In addition, the advantages of castor seed compresses for facial paralysis are not outstanding, not the preferred method, if necessary, can be used in conjunction with other methods of joint application.
