After a flexible lithotripsy procedure for kidney stones, it is recommended to remove the ureteral stent tube from the body before having intercourse. Otherwise, excessive friction between the stent tube and the bladder, kidney or ureteral mucosa can lead to an increased risk of bleeding. Because of the presence of a ureteral stent tube, urine from the bladder may reflux into the kidney through the stent tube, which may cause back pain or increase the risk of pelvic infection during intercourse. Generally, the time to remove the stent tube is about 1-3 months after the kidney stone surgery, depending on the postoperative review. If the stone has been completely expelled after surgery, the ureteral stent can be removed as soon as possible. However, if there are large residual stones after surgery, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy or medication for stone removal is needed until the stones are completely restored to normal before removing the stent tube.
