What are the criteria for an ultrasound to detect low amniotic fluid?

The criteria for diagnosing low amniotic fluid by ultrasound is an amniotic fluid index (AFI) of ≤5cm or a maximum amniotic fluid pool depth of ≤2cm. Low amniotic fluid in early and mid pregnancy often ends in miscarriage. In low amniotic fluid, the amniotic fluid is viscous, cloudy and dark green.
