The diagnosis of amniotic fluid hypohydramnios is made when the volume of amniotic fluid in late pregnancy is <300ml, and an amniotic fluid index (AFI) of ≤5cm or a maximum amniotic fluid depth (SDP) of ≤2cm on ultrasound. The incidence of severe amniotic fluid hypohydramnios is on the increase and can be as high as 4%.
