When a liver transplant is needed

Currently, liver transplantation is the most effective means of treating end-stage cirrhosis, but due to problems with liver sources, costs, complications such as rejection and ethics, liver transplantation does not meet the needs of all patients, and most of the limited liver sources are given to patients with liver cancer who have money but are not suitable for transplantation. Many cirrhotic patients end their precious lives while waiting for liver source, because in this group of patients, varices are severe, medication including endoscopic treatment has limited effect, surgical shunt surgery is risky, high complications such as hepatic coma, which is rarely used nowadays, and cut-off splenectomy has limitations such as poor liver function and poor coagulation function. Interventional therapy provides an effective, minimally invasive and safe means for such patients waiting for transplantation, and has been widely used abroad and is being done in some large hospitals in China, namely TIPSS surgery.
