What causes cholestasis

Cholestasis, also known as cholestasis, is caused by impaired flow or excretion of bile, and the etiology is divided into intrahepatic and extrahepatic stasis. Intrahepatic stasis can be caused by cirrhosis, tumors, and viral liver disease. Extrahepatic stasis can be classified as biliary stasis, stones, obstruction, congenital malformation of the biliary tract, pregnancy biliary stasis or stasis caused by food poisoning or trauma. Treatment of intrahepatic biliary stasis is mainly directed to the cause, for example, if it is caused by liver disease, antiviral or immune modulation, anti-inflammatory. If it is caused by extrahepatic cholestasis, lithotripsy will be performed. If it is caused by tumor, surgical treatment may be required. Chinese medicine mainly treats the most common viral liver disease, such as liver protection, enzyme lowering, bile relief, and damp-heat clearing. Pregnancy with elevated bile acids and bilirubin can also be treated with damp-heat clearing formulas.
