In Chinese medicine, appendicitis is referred to as canker sores, and is often identified clinically based on the tongue, pulse, and other conditions during the course of the disease. There are three different types of canker sores in TCM: first, the qi stagnation and blood stasis type, which corresponds to the Western clinical diagnosis of acute simple appendicitis. Second, the damp-heat type, which is mainly identified by acute suppurative appendicitis in Western medicine. Finally, the heat toxin invasion type is mainly identified by periappendiceal abscess in Western medicine appendicitis. For each different identification, different herbal dispositions and other different dispositions need to be prescribed by experienced herbalists weighing the pros and cons.
