Small nodules in the lungs do not cause coughing. Often patients will mention that they found nodules on their lungs after coughing and say that the cough is caused by the lung nodules, this logic is faulty. Outpatient clinics often encounter patients who come in for a cough and will cough for a long period of time, such as 3 months, but when asked, they find that the cough is not severe. Some patients have a chronic cough or an allergic cough that is not due to something growing on their lungs, and these patients will go for a CT and find nodules on their lungs, which are usually small, 3-4 mm, or some have multiple 1-2 mm nodules that are not related to the cough, and these coughs are not caused by nodules. If the cough is caused by nodules, these nodules are usually more severe and should then not be called nodules, but rather masses or tumors. So if the cough is caused by a nodular lesion on the lung, it is important to be very careful because it may have progressed to the level of a tumor or mass. Pulmonary nodules, especially small nodules, do not usually cause a cough, and nodules that do cause a cough should be taken very seriously.
