How to effectively treat fibromyalgia?

Sodium oxybutyrate is effective in the treatment of fibromyalgia Fibromyalgia (FM) is a disorder characterized by widespread pain, often complicated by sleep disturbances and chronic fatigue. Studies by Oregon academic Bennett and others have confirmed that sodium oxybutyrate treatment is effective and well-tolerated in patients with FM. In addition to having a definite effect on the characteristic symptoms of pain, sodium oxybutyrate significantly improved the overall condition of the patients. This was a 14-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study and the 1st international phase III clinical trial of sodium oxybutyrate in the treatment of fibromyalgia. A total of 573 patients with FM were enrolled in the study and randomized to three groups, which were given sodium oxybutyrate 4.5 g once a night, 6 g once a night or placebo, and the efficacy was assessed using the Pain Visual Analog Scale (PVAS), the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) and the Patient’s Global Impression of Change Scale (PGIc). The results showed that significantly more patients in the treatment group reported ≥30% pain reduction compared to the control group (P≤0.002), and there was also a significant improvement in the overall condition of the patients (P<0.001). Common adverse events in the treatment group were nausea, vomiting, dizziness, insomnia, anxiety, fatigue, muscle cramps and peripheral edema.
