Can vocal fold closure heal on its own?

Vocal fold insufficiency can be caused by a variety of reasons and usually does not heal on its own. The specific situation needs to be clearly diagnosed through clinical examination, so that targeted drug or surgical treatment can be performed. Vocal fold closure insufficiency, which means that the vocal folds do not close tightly when pronouncing sounds bilaterally and there are gaps, can cause hoarseness. In case of incomplete vocal fold closure caused by vocal fold masses, such as vocal fold polyps, vocal fold nodules, and vocal fold swelling, the masses cannot subside on their own and require medication to reduce the mucosal swelling or even surgical removal of the vocal fold masses. In the case of vocal fold paralysis resulting in incomplete closure, there is usually a problem with the nerve that governs the movement of the vocal folds, and there is no possibility of self-healing. If a patient has vocal fold incomplete closure, it is recommended that he or she be seen by a stomatologist or otorhinolaryngologist at a regular hospital in a timely manner to determine the cause and treat accordingly.
