Recently I noticed a lot of internet users, discussing their children’s looks online, but one parent’s message caught my attention. He said that his child has a long jaw, high arched palate, and uneven teeth, prominent upper incisors, thick lips, and little expression, but he did an IQ test and had no problems in this area. About this face shape, we medically call it adenoidal face shape, also called mouth breathing syndrome. There is a gland in the upper posterior side of the pharynx, the posterior side of the nasal cavity, and the posterior side of the uvula, where we call it adenoids. First of all, the presence of adenoids is normal, but if they are enlarged, it will affect the body’s breathing. In children without adenoids, they usually breathe through the nose without talking, and the air is cooled and filtered through the nasal cavity. However, if the adenoids are enlarged, it is equivalent to the nasal cavity being blocked. Normally, whether it is sleep or normal activities, go to the mouth for breathing. Especially in children who are in the period of facial development, mouth breathing syndrome can occur. For example, the lower jaw is stunted due to prolonged mouth opening, resulting in a small lower jaw, a backward tongue, a forward convexity of the upper jaw, and a high arch of the frontal cap, giving the impression of being dull and silly. If you really want to correct this condition, the surgery is relatively large. If caught early enough at school age, the adenoids can be removed, which can improve and stop this condition in time. If the child has reached puberty before such a problem is discovered, the adenoids need to be surgically removed to first improve the mouth breathing problem and after removing the causative factors, the jaws can then be corrected by lengthening the lower jaw and receding the upper jaw to improve the overall facial shape. In terms of means of resolution, it often relies on the displacement and correction of the bones, which is the best approach. In mild cases, thick lip thinning, bone grafting at the base of the nose, and chin augmentation are some of the operations that can be considered to improve the shape. If a child has any of these problems or conditions, it is recommended that the parents visit the plastic surgery department of the nearest hospital for timely treatment.
