Can cerebrovascular patients take Angong Niuhuang Pills for a long time?

Recently, a number of people have asked whether cerebrovascular patients can take Angong Niuhuang Pill for a long time, so I would like to answer here. An Gong Niu Huang Wan originated from Wu Jutong’s “Wenzhi Zhuan Jian” in the Qing Dynasty, and is composed of 12 drugs, including Niu Huang, Rhinoceros Horn, Musk, Pearl, Cinnabar, Xiong Huang, Huang Lian, Scutellaria, Gardenia, Yu Jin, Ice, and Gold Foil, etc. It has the function of clearing heat and detoxifying, calming and opening the body. It is one of the traditional “three treasures of warm diseases” in Chinese medicine, and has the reputation of “saving acute diseases in the instant and saving the dying in the moment”. It is also used to treat acute cerebrovascular disease, cranial injury, coma, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, pulmonary encephalopathy, viral encephalitis, pediatric convulsions and many other diseases. It should be noted that Angong Niuhuang Pill is an emergency medicine, and its indication lies in coma with high fever and thick yellow sputum, and it is not suitable for coma caused by various diseases without accompanying symptoms. There is no basis for some people to believe that they can take Angong Niuhuang Pill for a long time to prevent the occurrence of cerebrovascular disease. Because the formula contains two drugs, vermilion and staminaria, which contain mercury sulfide and arsenic sulfide respectively, long-term use may cause dizziness, headache, muscle tremors, mouth ulcers, kidney damage, hypogonadism, miscarriage, skin allergies, vomiting, diarrhea, gastrointestinal bleeding, thrombocytopenia and other manifestations of heavy metal poisoning, so it must be used with caution for patients with liver and kidney insufficiency, especially for elderly patients.
