Ataxic gait is characterized by widening of the base of the stride, swaying from side to side, lurching forward and backward, and inability to walk in a straight line, as if drunk. In this type of ataxia, the patient is unsteady in standing with both eyes open and closed, leaning to the affected side in the case of cerebellar lesions on one side, or leaning backwards in the case of cerebellar earth lesions. For ataxic gait can be seen in cerebrovascular disease or myositis, such as ataxic gait due to polymyopathy or ataxic gait due to vestibular dysfunction, the cause should be identified and then treated for the cause.
