Precautions for long-term indwelling urinary catheters

In the course of clinical treatment, I have encountered many patients who are unable to relieve themselves of urine under various circumstances, and who need long-term indwelling urinary catheters because they cannot be treated surgically for some physical reasons, and some patients have complications due to improper care, so it is necessary to remind families of some precautions. Long-term indwelling urinary catheters, first of all, need to be replaced regularly, there is no specific standard replacement time, in general, the shorter the replacement interval, the fewer complications, about two weeks is better, such as conditions do not allow, can also be replaced only after one month, but preferably not more than one month, long time not replaced easy to produce stones. Next is the prevention of infection, because long-term retention of urinary catheter is foreign body stimulation, bacteriuria is inevitable, but as long as attention to good preventive measures, most will not cause urinary tract infection performance, measures include more urethral disinfection, more water, more activities, urinary catheter replacement, pay attention to the aseptic operation, generally in the day of replacement of urinary catheter can be appropriate oral antibacterial or Chinese medicine purgative diuretic drugs, etc.. If conditions permit, bladder flushing can be performed intermittently. Finally, attention should also be paid to the position of the urethral tube placement to avoid long-term compression of the urethra, which can cause necrosis and scar formation of the urethral mucosa. The correct method is shown in the figure below.
