Depending on the site of intestinal obstruction, there are three types of intestinal obstruction: high intestinal obstruction, low intestinal obstruction and colonic intestinal obstruction. Low intestinal obstruction, also known as ileal obstruction, has late onset of vomiting, initially with gastric contents and later with fecal material, and the patient has significant abdominal distension throughout the abdomen. Colonic intestinal obstruction, also known as closed-collar intestinal obstruction, is characterized by significant peri-abdominal distention and uneven and symmetrical abdominal augmentation. Regardless of the type of intestinal obstruction that causes complete intestinal obstruction, there will be cessation of gas and defecation.
