When is the best time to operate for congenital scoliosis?

Congenital scoliosis currently emphasizes early detection and early treatment. Generally speaking, if scoliosis is severe or progresses significantly and requires surgery, it is more appropriate to operate at the age of 3-5 years. At this age, the child is able to cooperate to a certain extent, and anesthesia and nursing care are relatively easy; the bone quality of the child is better, and a suitable internal fixation can be selected. Of course, if the deformity is already very obvious before the age of 3, surgery can also be performed in time. The key is to have the concept of early detection and early treatment! Of course, treatment varies for different types of congenital scoliosis. For congenital scoliosis caused by hemivertebrae, currently most advocate hemivertebral resection to remove the cause and short segment fixation; while for poor segmentation or more complex mixed types with extensive lesions, more consider the growth rod technique to allow the spine, thorax and lungs to gain some development while correcting the deformity.
