At this stage, color ultrasound is a common test, especially in gynecology. Ultrasound examination of the uterus and adnexa is actually an examination of the female reproductive system, specifically the four parts of the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and pelvis. Through the examination of these areas, the clinician can help diagnose whether the patient has gynecological diseases and whether there are tumors in the ovaries. Ultrasound examination of the uterine adnexa can clearly determine whether a woman has congenital defects in the uterus, the thickness of the endometrium, whether there are major blockages in the fallopian tubes, whether there are cysts in the ovaries and whether there is a large amount of fluid in the pelvis. And the changes in these areas are very helpful for the clinician’s diagnosis. In addition, women who are pregnant also need to have an ultrasound examination of the uterine appendages because the fetus is located in the uterus. At this stage, there are two types of ultrasound examinations: the first is transabdominal and the second is transvaginal. The transabdominal examination requires holding urine, so that the bladder can be filled with urine in order to see the uterine adnexa more clearly. A transvaginal exam does not require holding urine and only requires the vaginal probe to be placed inside the vagina to see the uterine adnexa clearly. Women need to have an ultrasound examination of the uterine adnexa when they have symptoms such as pain in the abdomen, irregular menstruation, or lumbosacral pain and swelling.
