Lung Transplant Costs

Currently lung transplants cost around$300,000-400,000 in the hospital, but with the expansion of new drugs and health insurance coverage, the overall cost of lung transplants will see a decrease in the future. Living transplants are generally performed between relatives, but due to the cost of the procedure and the organ, preservation, monitoring, and post-operative rehabilitation, the cost of a living transplant is similar to the cost of other types of lung transplants and does not decrease much. Moreover, the success rate of lung transplantation is very low, and post-operative immune rejection and post-operative lung infections lead to uncertainty whether the patient will survive or not. After surgery patients need to take long-term drugs for immune rejection, which are quite expensive, and lung transplantation may be cheaper in the near future than before, but not by much.
