Do you understand that calcium supplements should not be taken blindly?

The occurrence of osteoporosis is importantly related to people’s long-term low-calcium diet. In addition, some bad behaviors of people also cause the accelerated loss of bone mass, such as excessive drinking, smoking, coffee, indiscriminate use of drugs, especially excessive or long-term use of glucocorticoids and sedatives, lack of exercise and heavy labor, bone calcium loss continuously caused by osteoporosis. He reminded people to take calcium scientifically and avoid the following misconceptions in order to stay healthy forever. Myth 1: Blindly listening to advertisements Many people often prefer calcium supplements to health care drugs, blindly believing the exaggerated propaganda of certain calcium products, such as “good deposition, fast absorption” and other promotional phrases. In fact, calcium enters the body first into the bloodstream, and then forms calcium-containing cells, after which it penetrates the outermost hard layer of the bone through a complex process of change and is fixed to the bone inside. People should increase their knowledge of health care and proper understanding of calcium supplementation, preferably by improving their dietary structure as much as possible to achieve adequate amounts of calcium from natural foods. Especially for children, calcium supplementation should be based on dietary supplements, and special care should be taken when taking calcium products. Children with weak gastrointestinal function should not choose calcium products with strong alkalinity; they should not drink soft drinks and carbonated beverages at the same time as taking calcium products, as this may reduce the absorption rate. In addition, children who take calcium products in excess will inhibit the absorption of zinc, so calcium supplementation for children with zinc deficiency should be based on dietary supplements. Myth 2: The more calcium you take, the better. Calcium supplementation is not the best, but the key is good absorption. Each time you take more than 200 mg of elemental calcium, the absorption rate will be reduced. Calcium deficiency in the elderly is an important cause of osteoporosis, and calcium intake should be enhanced both by improving dietary structure and by taking calcium products. The elderly should take into account their own physical condition and eat a reasonable diet to promote the body’s absorption of calcium; the intestinal absorption capacity of calcium is weaker in the elderly, and taking calcium preparations alone cannot effectively prevent osteoporosis from the pathogenesis; a certain dose of vitamins must be taken to prevent calcium loss, improve the intestinal absorption capacity of calcium, and promote bone metabolism and bone formation. However, it is especially important to note that calcium supplementation alone cannot prevent osteoporosis comprehensively. Endocrine disorders, reduced vitamin D activity, reduced exercise and excessive salt intake may all lead to osteoporosis in the elderly. Myth 3: Calcium supplementation does not need to be guided by a doctor Some patients with chronic diseases should take calcium supplements under the guidance of a doctor. Studies have found that improper calcium supplementation for heart patients can lead to accidents due to calcium deposition, so patients with cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and coronary heart disease should take calcium or calcium preparations under the guidance of a specialist. In addition, patients who are taking thyroid hormones, tetracycline, corticosteroids and other hormonal drugs should consult their doctor first when taking calcium supplements, because calcium supplements and such drugs may interact and have adverse effects on the human body.
