Kidney deficiency is not the same as having kidney disease

As TCM doctors, we often encounter patients who fearfully ask, “Doctor, you said I have kidney deficiency, is there something wrong with my kidneys?” We will laugh and say, “This kidney is not the same kidney.” Why does this happen? The main reason is that these patients have confused the concept of “kidney” in Chinese medicine and Western medicine. The “kidney” in Western medicine is an anatomical pair of substantial organs. The function is to produce urine, eliminate metabolites from the body, and regulate the body’s water and salt metabolism and acid-base balance. A variety of metabolic products produced by the human body in the process of metabolism, including toxic substances, mainly through the kidneys in the form of urine out of the body, the kidney urination not only excretes metabolic products, but also controls the total amount of fluid in the body, osmotic pressure and acidity. If there is a problem with the kidneys, these functions of the kidneys will be affected, which will endanger human health. The “kidney” in Chinese medicine is a very broad concept. In the theory of “five organs and six bowels” in Chinese medicine, it is said that “kidney is the root of the innate nature and the root of yin and yang”. The yang of all the organs depends on the yang of the kidney to warm them, the yin of all the organs depends on the yin of the kidney to moisten them, so the prosperity of each organ depends on the kidney’s health. The Nei Jing says: “The kidneys collect essence, main water, main gas, main bones, bones produce marrow, marrow is connected to the brain, its Hua in the hair, its orifice in the ear ……”. So the “kidney” in Chinese medicine, according to Western medical theory, it covers the human body’s urinary, reproductive, endocrine, immune, neurological, vascular and many other system functions, is a very complex human physiological system, and does not refer specifically to the anatomy of a particular organ. According to Chinese medicine, kidney deficiency is the dysfunction of these systems in the human body, resulting in one or another discomfort, and is not as terrible as the kidney problems of Western medicine. According to TCM, patients with kidney deficiency will have many symptoms, such as memory loss, lack of energy, dizziness, sexual dysfunction, infertility, frequent urination, nocturnal urination, premature aging, insomnia, weakness of the waist and knees, weakness, hearing loss, and premature graying of hair. Chinese medicine in the treatment of these conditions will be based on your case identification analysis, symptomatic treatment, every time will achieve better results.
